Portrait of Bree Sternbaer Portrait of Bree Sternbaer and a dolphin

Bree Sternbaer has always considered herself a little bit of an odd duck, but it's part of who she was growing up. She values uniqueness and being different. This drove her to collect as many hobbies as she could during her childhood, and through it, she found some of her favorite pastimes, and those that would shape the rest of her future.

She's always loved animals, from the moment she could talk about them. Animals and the natural world have been one of her strongest inspirations in all she does, art and writing alike. She tries to communicate both the beauty and brutality of nature in her more serious works, but oftentimes finds herself just drawing her characters for fun and to pass the time. She's a big biology nerd and loves to study genetics, hoping to secure a career in the animal genomics field working with biotechnology.

Bree has been writing stories since she could spell (somewhat correctly) out words on paper, but only became serious about writing a fully-fleged book in 2023. As such, the idea for the Cassican Duology was born, stemming from an assignment submission for a creative writing class that asked for the "first chapter of a hypothetical book". Bree does not know to this day what possessed her to stick with the project for so long, but it's a good thing she did, because it led to her first published book and debut novel.

Her personal philosophy and work motto can be summarized by one of her favorite poems, "Invictus", by William Ernest Henley:

"Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul."
